Helping Children Name Big Feelings
By Christina Y. Amen · July 3, 2026
Big feelings become manageable feelings the moment they have a name.
Here's a five-step practice we teach families and educators:
1. Notice — Pause when you see a shift. "I noticed your shoulders tensed up."
2. Name — Offer a word. "That looks like frustration. Or maybe disappointment?"
3. Normalize — Let them know the feeling is welcome. "That makes sense."
4. Navigate — Ask a small question. "What would help right now?"
5. Nurture — Stay close. Regulation is a relationship, not a technique.
Do this once a day, for a week, with any child. You'll be surprised what changes.
